heck yeah!
That’s right, after a long hiatus, I’m back with another speed record. I peaked with my previous speed record, as the drag was already minimal, and the only way to gain a couple m/s would be to launch at a hotter time of day during the right time of year. This time, I’m going for mach number.
The RAPIER flames out at mach 6.0, but through genius flight profiles this craft promises to exceed mach 6.5. A description of the flight profile is in the album above.
Flight Profile:
- Enable SAS, launch the craft, keeping the nose and vertical speed above the horizon, and level off before the SRBs run out.
- Once the SRBs exhaust (no pun intended) their fuel supply, ditch them and disable SAS
- Enable AtmosphereAutopilot’s Fly-By-Wire control. Use the default parameters, with one modification: limit AoA to ~10 degrees instead of 25.
- Fly as low as you can until you’ve hit mach 5.93 (you can try for 5.94, but it doesn’t always get there)
- Change the AoA limit to 2 degrees. Now, hold full back stick (the FBW will limit the amount of pitch authority you have, so don’t be surprised if the pitch is minimal
- Your mach number will initially decrease. That’s to be expected. Keep pitching and it will start going back up again.
- When the mach number decreases a second time, you’ve reached peak mach. Write that down, and deploy the fairing
- Deply the chutes as soon as you can. When you splash down, you will lose the front aileron, that’s to be expected
Experiment with different values instead of 2 degrees for the AoA limit, and see what mach number you can hit! Let me know in the comments if you get above 6.5!
tl;dr: level out, go speedymode, go up
