Description

THIS NEEDS KJR TO FUNCTION!

Alright. Here’s a 3054 part, 460 meters, 31.6 kiloton VTOL SSTO made out of stock parts. Its rotors are as unstable as anything can be in KSP, and successfully launching it may require some attempts. Dozens of those.

Now, how do you launch it?
After spawning in, don’t instantly start the rotors. Wait for five or so minutes with brakes on. The reason for this is that FATs oscillate for a fair bit after spawning under 1g.

Then start the rotors and Mammoth engines in the middle to provide some help as shown in the video. If you’re lucky and rotors were spawned normally, there should be enough thrust and lift being generated to take the thing off the ground. If not, repeat.

After the initial takeoff, gain some height. I’m pretty sure that balancing on this version of the craft is fine, but if it isn’t, you may play with it a bit. It worked for me.
Ideally, at ~300-400m you should turn on Mammoths on the nose. This is probably the trickiest part of the flight, as you need to simultaneously stop and lock the rotors, turn your craft by 90 degrees and, like, not crash. Takes some practice.

But after that, you’re pretty much fine to go. Fly it like your normal rocket. Don’t gain too much speed in the lower atmosphere. Start turning at, like, 20 or so kilometers. Extend and activate Wolfhounds as early as possible. There’s not that much fuel.

…Or you can just spawn it facing upwards and start already vertically. That works too, I guess.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.12.3.
