Description

Eve hoverdrone explorer

The MayFly is a simple but challenging rotorcraft designed specifically for the thick atmosphere and higher solar energy of Eve. While it can fly at Kerbin, the lower solar energy will not allow it to fly very far (under 3 km) before its battery power will force it down.

Inspired by the awesome NASA/Johns Hopkins APL DragonFly probe scheduled to fly to the Saturnian moon Titan in 2026, the MayFly’s weight and power were carefully adjusted.

Flight is ridiculously easy, but landing is not. You’ll have to carefully level off (put the SAS in Normal maneuver for a perfect horizontal level) then descend.

At around 100 meters get yourself to under 10 m/s so that you’re under 6 m/s by 2-4m high, then drop the throttle a little more and then cut the power, which the simple landing struts should endure.

Flights are best during the noon of Eve where solar power will be maximum and flights of hours are possible.

An Experiments Storage Unit is included as you gather data in-flight or on the surface. Don’t transmit data while in flight or you’ll likely drain power and crash.

Built with 117 of the finest parts, its root part is probeCoreOcto2.v2.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.9.1.
