Description
A mod space craft without proper naming. Built with 144 of the finest parts, its root part is RO-ProcTankSpaceplane.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.6.1 for RSS/RO.
This is two stage HTHL winged booster and space plane for crew transfers between Earth and orbital stations. With more than 900 m/s dV available at 180x180 parking oribt it can reach almost any LEO station.
The booster can re-enter the atmosphere and glide to the landing provided you have a runway somewhere downrange.
If launching from Vandenberg, it can land somewhere near Brownsville, but course change capability in upper atmosphere is limited, so special runway might be needed (think Kerbal Konstructs).
As RSS runway is maintained notoriously awful by ground team, grab the fix
As of end of July 2019, MechJeb Ascent Guidance can not handle craft with such configuration, so use the following technique (flying with Atmosphere Autopilot recommended, if you want to land and recover the booster, you should have FMRS):
- Stage booster Raptors, release brakes when thrust is above 800 kN
- Rotate at 180 m/s
- Establish climb at 30-40 m/s, cut throttle to 70%
- At Mach 1.0 gradually start climbing more aggressively, aim for 250 m/s vertical speed
- Close to booster burn-out you should accelerate to more than 4 km/s, altitude should be above 70 km and still climbing
- Prepare for staging - activate RCS, stage Merlins, stage radial separator.
- Immediately after separation translate up with RCS or slightly pitch up in order not to collide with booster.
- Keep burning with rate of climb 400-500 m/s until Ap of 180 km reached.
- Use MechJeb to circularize. Merlins have 3 more ignitions, should be enough for circularization and plane change if needed.
- For orbital maneuvers use S5.92s
Booster re-entry
- Booster Ap usually is 110-130 km, use RCS to attain 40-50 deg AoA on re-entry.
- Try keep booster level, usually it just stays there
- In more dense atmosphere it should be controllable more or less as normal airplane
- Glide to landing, landing speed is about 100 m/s
Space plane re-entry
- Use Trajectories to guide space plane to the runway
- Re-entry AoA should be 35-40 deg, keep side slip as close to 0 deg as you can.
- For safe re-entry make sure you have at least 200 units of NTO for controlling attitude with RCS, however re-entry without RCS is possible, although chances of losing some parts due to overheat increase. (As a last resort, Abort action group detaches crew cabin and primes emergency parachutes)
- Landing speed is about 90-100 m/s
NOTE:
RSS/RO doesn’t provide MaxSkinTemp to Procedural Wings as of now. You’ll need a MM patch to fix it (coming soon)
KJR also excludes Procedural Wings for ages, but I didn’t find any problems so far, so you might want to remove this exclusion from KJR config.
