Description

A stock aircraft called DDE-proptest2. Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.12.3, with 46 of the finest parts, its root part is Mark2Cockpit.

DDE’s beautiful Mustang twin prop, the swjr-swis’s way. This one was my response to DDE’s call for help with getting the props to work. DDE didn’t publish the original; I felt it deserved exposure, even if only in my variant. Cruise of 270-280 m/s @ 6500 m (mach 0.87-0.89).

Hopefully DDE will still finish and share the original - I would gladly link this directly to the source.

NOTE: throttle controls torque, translate forward/backward (default H/N) controls blade angle.

Details

  • Type: SPH
  • Class: aircraft
  • Part Count: 46
  • Pure Stock
  • KSP: 1.12.3

Mods

  • Breaking Ground DLC
  • Squad (stock)
Typical take off (hands off the stick):
  • engage brakes, SAS stabilize
  • deploy flaps (RCS)
  • stage (or AG1) to start the engines
  • throttle up to 100% (torque)
  • disengage brakes
  • press and hold H (translate forward)
  • (best blade AoA for max thrust is 4-5 deg)
  • retract gear when airborne
  • retract flaps
  • keep tapping H as needed to keep optimal blade AoA (which maximizes thrust)
  • at some point you will need to slowly lower again - translate back (N)
  • optional: as you gain altitude and when convenient, lower throttle (torque) to where it just maintains max RPM. It won’t change thrust, but it helps save fuel. At cruise altitude throttle can be down to 22% and lower.

Don’t take anything too seriously, I’m mostly just having crazy fun testing the (im)possibilities of flight, physics and design in the amazing sandbox that is Kerbal Space Program. Feedback is welcome!
