Description

A stock rocket called CheapOrbiter KS2. Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.12.3, with 18 of the finest parts, its root part is probeCoreHex.v2.

An entry to 4D4850‘s Launch a KubeSat! forum challenge. One IONIC KubeSat to LKO at minimal cost, using a recoverable single-stage lifter: 2.78 t, 18 parts, 3050 funds. Pure stock.

Note: Liberal clipping has been used to fully utilize the total volume of the craft, and to gain as much benefit from the fairing’s drag-shielding as possible. Clipping is explicitly allowed in the challenge rules.

Mission Profile
  • SAS Hold, throttle full, stage for lift-off
  • immediately tap to pitch down ~2 degrees
  • switch to SAS Prograde at 120 m/s
  • should cross 45 degree pitch when passing 7500-8500 m
  • cut throttle when Ap reaches ~75 km
  • keep SAS on SRF for less drag losses
  • stage fairing when passing 70 km
  • AG1 to disable Twitch engines (the Ant is enough and is more fuel-efficient)
  • start circularization burn ~30 secs to Ap
  • stage to release KubeSat
  • set SAS Retrograde
  • burn remaining fuel for reentry
  • sip your beverage until lifter lands
  • recover

Don’t take anything too seriously, I’m mostly just having crazy fun testing the (im)possibilities of flight, physics and design in the amazing sandbox that is Kerbal Space Program. Feedback is welcome!
