The Defender was an international co-operation to develop a high-performance multirole fighter.
However, the project nearly collapsed when a major backer pulled out of the agreement and used the design studies to develop their own aircraft sooner. The remaining partners continued the development and eventually succeeded, albeit years behind schedule.
