America’s Newest Fighter

The F-35 is an extremely capable, (albeit controversial) fifth-generation fighter, serving in the USAF, Navy, and the Marine Corps. Each branch has a dedicated version of the Lightning II. The -B version, flown by the Marine Corps features a VTOL system which won the Collier Trophy for Aviation Innovation. The system, which features a lift fan and a swiveling rear engine, allows the JSF to preform short takeoffs and vertical landings, given a light enough loadout.

Flying the JSF

The VTOL system here is reliable, but requires a bit of knowledge on how to use it. Follow this sequence and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Vertical Takeoff:
1. Use action group 2 to free the engine housing
2. Stage to separate the engine
3. Switch to the engine ([ or ]) and use action group 1 to swivel the engine downward
4. Use action group 3 to activate the lift fans, and RCS to enable roll jets
5. Throttle up and take off.

Transition to horizontal flight:
1. gain ~200m altitude and minimum 20m/s forward velocity
2. Use action group 1 to toggle the engine downward. It should do this without switching.
3. Once the engine is halfway rotated, disable the lift fans (AG 3)
4. Once the engine redocks, throttle up and fly off. Afterburners (AG 4) help gain speed faster.
5. Close the engine housing (AG 2)

Transition to vertical flight:
1. Gain ~200m altitude and minimum 60m/s forward velocity.
2. Cut the throttle, use action groups 2, 1, RCS and 3 (in that order)
3. Switch to the engine, and use action group 1 again.
4. Once the engine redocks, throttle back up and land. It hovers at just over 2/3rds throttle, and is fairly responsive (as far as SAS-light VTOLS go) in VTOL mode.
