Kerbal Tiny Shuttle - KTS 1 ‘Kerlumbia’

A multi-purpose, Kerbal-sized shuttle design for completing various missions around LKO. Budget-friendly launch vehicle features side-mounted SRBs that start off slow but build to a fiery start to your orbit. This package contains 1x comm sat and 1x KMU (Kerballed Maneuvering Unit) in the payload bay, for immediate mission-ready capability.

Features
  • Engines: Ridiculously overpowered with 3x Skiffs, and 2x Twitch for stability. Tons of little RCS thrusters everywhere.
  • Cargo Bay: Action group 1 triggers the KAL controller which opens and closes the cargo bay group.
  • Internal Airlock, Storage and Science Bay. Contains 4x EVA seats (for a total vehicle capacity of 8). Has 4x storage containers (preloaded with some EVA and Repair Kits), guidance computer, and science experiments. Medium Docking Port. Action Group 2 toggles the hinge lock and 3 opens and closes the hatch.
  • Payload Capacity: Can fit about the size of an X200-16 fuel tank. Includes small ‘Comm Job’ communication and research satellite so you can run a small mission right out the box. Decouple and RCS away to deploy! Has a Grabby Claw Jr. for rescue/recovery, and 2x small docking attachments to meet any mission profile.
  • KMU (Kerballed Maneuvering Unit) - Outside the airlock you’ll find the latest KMU pack. Jump in and relive Jeb McCandless’s historic untethered spacewalk! Has ~ 900 ∆v. Recommended to use fine control and a Pilot. You can re-dock it to the spacecraft by flying it into the Claw.

Launch Procedures
  • Throttle up Engines to 100%, turn on ‘SAS’, set to Radial-Out
  • Liftoff and twitch the nose down a bit to keep trajectory headed straight up. This has a slow start.
  • Accelerate to 120+ m/s, begin Gravity Turn, I find it’s best to fly this manually, nudging the nose down as you go. Engage RCS.
  • Upon SRB cutoff the nose will naturally pitch up to assist a clean separation. Separate then cutoff Main Engines or continue to burn to desired altitude, hold Prograde.
  • Relight engines to finish orbit. Vehicle should have ~ 1000-1100 ∆v in a 100x100 orbit. Toggle off control surfaces with group 9.
  • It doesn’t have a ton of glide so you want to do an accurate deorbit burn. Turn control surfaces back on. Action Group 8 toggles tail fin braking position for a little bit of speed check. Deploy parachute after touchdown. It takes water landings really well, too.
