K-Orion D - Single-Launch Adventure To Duna and Back!
Inspired by various real-world designs, with a fair bit of Kerbalization for fun. No need to assemble in LKO for this Apollo-style interplanetary trot. This stack will get you to Duna and back with no flak, Jack.
The K-Orion series spacecraft has room for 3x crew, over 2000 dV in the can, and packs all the basic science experiments on the capsule. Has all kinds of bells and whistles like a cool RCS array, docking/recovery lamps, and onboard Remote Guidance Unit.
Packing some serious heat, the Booster/Core Stage is capable of reaching LKO on its own. Can burn continuously or be re-lit at will. Has a full abort mode in case things get hairy.
The Interplanetary Stage has more than enough dV (~2700) to get you to Duna or plenty of other places in the Kerbol system. For Duna, the mission plan is to remain on the stack until the braking burn has been completed. It can also provide enough fuel for optional orbital operations around Ike.
Once in low Duna orbit, the Interplanetary Stage separates and 2x crew transfers for landing. The included DSAM, or Duna Surface Access Module, is mostly meant to be an atmospheric lander. It’s been tested on Duna and even from Kerbin orbit, so it’ll also likely work at Laythe. The heatshield and atmosphere handles most of the braking, and it lands on rocket power provided by 4x Cub engines. Start the burn late, almost a suicide burn.
Ascent stage contains an Experiment Bay to maximize returned science, and an OKTO Probe Core for guidance. Separates from the descent stage with 4x Separatrons and gets to orbit on a Spark.
A stock+DLC rocket called K-Orion 1.11D. Built with 346 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1-3pod.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.11.2.
