The Hit and Git Fighter

The humble Wildcat was slower, clunkier, and much, much chubbier than the Japanese Zero. Even being the underdog it was, the Wildcat proved to perform remarkably. Why isn’t apparent at first, but the Wildcat’s extensive combat record shows one thing - this little fighter could take a beating. An F4F landing back on the carrier deck rattled with bullet holes wasn’t unusual. Occasionally, the F4F would even land with gaping holes in the wings! Pilots loved the fighter. It seemed to attract the best of them, who touted a 6.9:1 combat kill-to-loss ratio and brought home the most Medals of Honor than group of pilots.

Flying the Wildcat

Being my first real propeller driven aircraft, I’d like to say it flies pretty well! Let me know what you think in the comments, and if you have any tips I’ll update the craft :p

Takeoff:

Throttle slowly to 1/3. Because of propeller torque, expect to apply some rudder during takeoff. Vr is 30m/s. After takeoff, feel free to throttle up fully.

Operating the Custom Gear:

Press 2 to unlock gear once positive rate is achieved, then press G to retract the gear. (You will need to press G twice because of how KSP deals with KAL controllers.) Once ready to land, press g to lower the gear. Once it is in a stable downright position, lock the gear with action group 2. You may want to double check all hinges are locked before touchdown.

Going Fast!

Once about 85m/s has been reached, hold K to optimize the propeller pitch for high speeds. You should then be able to reach 140m/s.

Action Groups:

1: Toggle Flaps
2: Toggle Landing Gear Lock
K and L: Change Propeller Pitch

Enjoy!
