A mod rocket called Reusable Mun Lander. Built with 113 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1pod.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.3.0.
Inspired by SpaceX’s ITS, I built this reusable Mun lander fo ferry contract tourists onto the surface of the Mun and back. Most contracts require a landing only for some tourists, while other tourists just need a Mun orbit. Put those in the Mk1 cockpit and leave them in the orbiter while you ferry the second tourist to the surface.
The lander has no science, as it is just meant for tourism, but I guess you can stick some experiments on it, maybe even include a Science Jr. I haven’t tried whether the delta-V would be enough.
The lifter is able to reach low orbit, where the stages separate, and the lifter deorbits and lands back on Kerbin, while the rest stays in orbit until you’re done bringing down the lifter.
Reaching orbit can be quite tricky. I found it best to turn early, 30 degrees at 100m/s, and then set the autopilot to follow prograde. Lower the thrust as altitude increases, and keep the TWR slightly below 2, or the G-meter at 1.5.
Deorbit the lifter to a 25km periapsis, and just hold retrograde during reentry. You may need to wiggle a bit if a heat bar threatens to blow something up, but otherwise it should be fine. The parachutes ensure a soft landing at 5m/s so the engines survive the impact. Also, the six Reliant engines provide a wide support, so it won’t tip over so easily.
The lander has just enough delta-V for suboptimal landings, and rendezvous maneuvers with the orbiter.
Back at kerbin, there’s plenty of fuel to circularize a low orbit before deorbiting the craft to 25km periapsis while over the big crater. There should even be some fuel left to slow down some more during reentry. So you have some influence on the landing spot, and can get pretty close to KSC.
Landing the whole thing on the lander legs, as shown in the screenshot, is quite the feat. It took me several attempts. Some cushioning with the lander engine is necessary, or else the landing gears will break. Also, you need some level ground, as the craft is quite top-heavy and will easily tip over and stuff will break. The safest landing is flat on the belly. Once the parachutes are fully deployed, the reaction wheels have enough authority to orient the craft before touchdown. You can, of course, also dump the tanks and use the heat shield. To do that, reorder the staging and move stage S0 down a slot.
This craft uses the TweakScale mod for scaled-down versions of the spherical monopropellant tanks. If you really want to go stock, you can use the standard FL-R10 small RCS fuel tank and reduce the amount of fuel, but this will weigh a bit more.
