What do you do with useless satellites that you just shot into orbit for some contract?
Just leave it there and have it clutter your map view with circles? Naaaah.
Plan ahead and equip it with parachutes so you can deorbit it? Boooring.
Just get it down and have it crash or burn? What a waste.
With this craft you can collect them in style.
It uses an inline hangar from the hangar mod to stow away collected satellites. There’s enough volume to pick up more than one if you have enough fuel to fly to each one.
Of course, this craft can also be used to deploy satellites. For example, to build a relay network of three keostationary satellites.
I think it has plenty of delta-V even for larger orbits and complicated rendezvous maneuvers, inclination changes, etc.
Getting into orbit can be a bit tricky, as the Terrier engine does not give the last stage a TWR greater than 1. Make sure your apoapsis reaches >70km before the second stage flames out, by throttling down as altitude increases, keeping the acceleration below 2G, or the TWR below 2.
You may have a problem fitting satellites with non-retractable solar panels into the hangar. Well… you can either try to destroy the panels with collision maneuvers, but a simpler solution is just to position the satellite as close as you can over the hangar and then close the gates. This will make the hangar
eat the satellite alive, breaking the solar panels in the process.
Because the hangar mod already depends on the
configurable containers mod, I used a reconfigured toroidal fuel tank for monopropellant.
