Description

A mod aircraft called XV-1B Hummingbird Tilt Rotor. Built with 59 of parts made by the lowest bidder, its root part is Mk1FuselageStructural.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 0.90.0. Please note Ven’s Stock Part Revamp is highly recommended due to node attachment issues between Mk1 cockpits and fuselages. The mod is available here: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/92764-90-Stock-Part-Revamp-Update-1-7-2!

The XV-1 is intended to serve El Cheapo Aerospace as a low cost tilt-rotor research aircraft. Who needs expensive modern turboshaft engines when you can use an old radial engine from the 1940s to turn a jet engine’s compressor? The huge savings can then be channeled towards the purchase of Jeb’s luxury snacks.

I reinstated this craft to active duty after I was a bit saddened by reading real-world tilt rotor aircraft aren’t as agile as those depicted in the Dale Brown novels I grew up with, namely Hammerheads and Air Battle Force. They read like they could fly rings around the opposition, or so I imagined!

I took the old turbo-compound tilt rotor out for a spin and was shocked to realize the maximum G-load for the thing is 12Gs! That’s greater than some real-world aerobatic aircraft and greater than many first-rate fighter planes. I put together the video below which has to be seen to be believed - Dale Brown’s vision of super-maneuverable tilt-jet tactical aircraft seems plausible at least in the realm of KSP!
