Description

A mod aircraft called Beagle 1 Rover. Built with 30 of the finest parts, its root part is MkVHog.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.0.4.

The Beagle or versions of it have been my favorite rovers since version KSP version .23.

I published the Beagle 2 rover here on Kerbal X first because I was having some issues with the ability of the Beagle to scale inclines, and a 6 wheel version had better ability to do so.

I’ve since figured out what the issue was with the new version of Kerbal Foundries wheels. You need to set the torque per wheel at a higher value to get better climbing ability. Now that I’ve done that, the Beagle is once again back to the performance I’m used to. It can handle some pretty steep inclines, particularly if you use a switchback technique.

(If you want to make the Beagle 2 (the 6 wheel version also here on Kerbal X) into an extreme climber, try setting all 6 wheels to maximum torque and go climb the nearest mountains to the west of the KSC. Be impressed. I am.)

The Beagle is a nimble, fast rover capable of carrying two Kerbals anywhere on any ground in style.

Note - In place of a crew hull section in the middle, there is a full 1/3 length LLL rocket fuel tank. This will supply the Fuel Cells essentially forever.

Or - you can attach engines and parachutes to the sides of the Beagle and it can de-orbit itself and land on almost any world short of Eve or Tylo! I highly recommend Bahamuto’s Pop Out engines for the job. Since you can keep them as part of the rover, and do Mass Effect style rocket powered jumps on low grav worlds! The KW Wheels are capable of taking landings from such leaps as well. (Be sure and quicksave before trying this, of course!)

One of the best tricks about the Beagle - and I’ve tested this for confirmation - is that if you have the Kerbal Inventory System mod, and a container big enough, then all the parts required to build a Beagle on site can be transported that way (probably takes at least 2 containers to transport the whole thing). A Kerbal Engineer can BUILD an entire Beagle rover at your destination instead of trying to launch it inside a fairing or de-orbit it on its own. Since the Beagle is an extremely simple design, you can probably put one together in 30 minutes or less.

Mind you - the weight will still be the same, so don’t think you’re getting something for nothing. But it does mean more convenience for transport.
