The F-4 Phantom II was a fighter aircraft used by the United States Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps during the Cold War. Because missiles were thought to be the future of air combat, designers focused on making a fast, stable missile platform. For these reasons, it was a horrible dogfighter and had no gun. Without a gun, American pilots were at a disadvantage over the skies of Vietnam, so gun pods were outfitted by many squadrons.
This craft comes with only two drop tanks and a gun pod. I will leave the rest of the load-out for whatever works for you.
FYI there are 4 engines clipped to look like 2. For this reason you will see some flaming-out of various engines on takeoff. Don’t worry, they will all regain power shortly if you continue your roll and add afterburners. If you don’t like the clipping you can fix it yourself, but it will be underpowered.
On takeoff, take care not to tailstrike. On landing, make sure you use the throttle to control the descent, or it will come down hard.
Additional Notes:
This plane, like its inspiration, is not very maneuverable, but is relatively stable. Despite this, SAS likes to be weird sometimes, so if you see the elevators oscillating or vibrating, just turn SAS off for a bit. It still flies ok. I found that playing with autostrut also helped.
Also, the cockpit is tilted down compared with the rest of the plane. As a result, your indicator on the nav ball will most of the time be below the prograde indicator. If you do not like this clip a docking port inside one of the parts and point it forward. Then right click it and select control from here.
A mod aircraft called F-4 Phantom II. Built with 94 of the finest parts, its root part is JuniorFuselage.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.4.5.
