I prefer SSTO’s made with TurboJet rather than Rapiers (it’s an aesthetic thing), so this is my first successful SSTO in KSP v1.0. Uses two TurboJets (which tbh is a bit OP) and a aerospike.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.0.0.
(still works in 1.0.2)
- Type: SPH
- Class: ship
- Part Count: 36
Craft will just lift off the runway of you deploy the main flaps (action group 3), or just pull up normally.
Shortly after take off throttle back to about 2/3 (or you will overhead and explode). Climb at about 30 degrees to 10km then pitch to about 20 degrees. When you start to heat up pitch up and slam the throttle to full (you’ll climb out of the
DangerZone before you overheat).
As you start loosing speed fire up the rocket engine, let the jets stay on until they flame out (then cut them). Keep pitch aligned with prograde and burn for a 100km AP. Circularize as normal. Should leave you with enough fuel to de-orbit and some spare jet fuel to fly to target if needed. If you get the decent timed right you can glide into runway landing without needing power.
You can descend without generating heat if you maintain a pitch of 35-40 degrees until you’ve dropped to a vertical speed of 400m/s.
Has a set of solar panels in the inline storage container, oddly enough, you don’t need to open the container for them to generate power.

Don't forget, people build craft at all skill levels, just 'cos something is 'newbish' doesn't mean it needs hatin'.
