Description
WARNING: This ship requires Cryogenic engines pack to configure the transfer stage fuel tanks to Liquid fuel and Oxidizer only.
This is a Duna system grand tour ship, capable of transfer, insertion, landing on Duna, orbit from surface of Duna, transfer to Ike, landing on Ike, orbit from surface of Ike, return to Kerbin system. On my playthrough, I had more than 5km/s dV left before final pod separation and re-entry on Kerbin. In theory you could take the ship all the way to Dres flyby before coming back to Kerbin.
Mission profile:
*Go to orbit with the included launcher and head to Duna. Aero brake at ~20 Km (pointing retrograde).
*Once in stable orbit perform de-orbit burn, undock the lander and put the interplanetary stage back on stable orbit (~60x60km recommended). Make sure you have your parachute pressures set to the minimum value (0.01 units), once temperatures stabilise, open your drogue chutes, wait until speed drop further and open main chutes.
*Once below 50m/s decouple the heat shield and activate the engines. *Perform powered assisted landing.
*Go back to orbit, dock with the main craft and transfer to Ike.
*Refuel the lander with the oxidizer available in the bottom tank of the interplanetary stage. Land on Ike, do your stuff and head back to orbit. Dock with the main ship and transfer all the liquid fuel left in the lander to the interplanetary stage. Dump the excess oxidizer back to the lander as you won’t need it any more and decouble the bottom stage of the lander, leaving only the command pod. *Head back to Kerbin.
The lander is heavily over engineered as is the interplanetary stage. Even an unskilled pilot could easily accomplish the mission if he follows the profile above. If you love efficient rocket designs, give it a thumbs up and come see me on my streams: http://www.twitch.tv/ivg123
