Hanger 28
A Space Carrier with a Hanger, forward landing pad, science lab, and a raised bridge.
This is derived from Dsoudure’s original 2015 post on curseforge.
(mother-ship-class-aircraft-carrier-stock-1-0-4-ksp)
One of my favorite ships. Love the way this looks.
I spent a bunch of time on this space carrier with perfecting and documenting the ascent, and working on lighting colors. I also added more ventral solar panels for Jool, radiators, more docking ports, and a couple of new relay dishes.
After reaching orbit you should still have 700 -1100 delta V.
If heading to Jool, I now recommend Hangar 13 with extra fuel tanks or boosters.
By saving 40 tons in engines and using Wolfhounds its actually more efficient without the NERV engines. However it requires Making History, so I’m keeping this ship fully stock.
Details
- Type: VAB
- Class: station
- Part Count: 669
- Pure Stock
- KSP: 1.7.3
Ascent
- Requires Direct Ascent (straight up).
- Turn on SAS
- Keep it Slow.
- Do not exceed 130 m/s until 5000m
- Do not exceed 150 m/s until 9000m
- Do not exceed 170 m/s until 12000m
- Start 5 degree turn to the east after you have cleared 10000m.
- Punch it up to full throttle after 12000m or at outer booster separation.
- Ease down slowly another 5 or 10 degrees (about 75 to 65 degrees) and click prograde.
- Target an apoapsis ~120km (anything between 100km and 200km is fine).
- Circularize at apoapsis (this will be a big burn)
- If desired, stage the forward struts before periapsis rises outside the atmosphere. Careful they will slam into the back if you are under full thrust. Its fine to leave them and the Nervs unstaged.
Rendezvous & Docking
- Watch your fuel. If you don’t have delta V tools, you may want to refuel first.
- With less than a 2 degree plane change and a Holman transfer you should be fine.
- Match orbital planes then Rendezvous.
- Here are 5 rendezvous tips
- Also you may need to time warp a few orbits to get a rendezvous. Check each orbit by dragging your maneuver node around the orbit. Advance to the next orbit if there is no good rendezvous.
- Dock with just eyeballing the alignment of the docking ports or use the mod Navball Docking Alignment Indicator. Remember to disengage SAS right before connecting. The better the alignment the better the mate.

Recommended Mods
No mods are required. As with any carrier you will need to be comfortable with rendezvous, docking, and transferring fuel.
- I always test (and dock) with no mods. But I do prefer mods so I don’t have to keep tweaking nodes or flipping screens.
MechJeb2 (for delta V display, Holman transfer timing calculations, closest approach display, and orbital inclination)
Navball_Docking_Alignment_Indicator_CE (more precise docking)
TacFuelBalancer (transferring fuel to all fuel tanks in one go, or transferring from hidden tanks)
Description
- Toggle Main Rhinos
- Toggle Nerv Engines
- Toggle Aerospike
- Hanger Door Solar Panels
- Toggle Lower Solar Panels
- Radiators
- available
- Small Antennas
Ascend straight up at 130 m/s til 10km.
A stock rocket called Hanger 28. Built with 669 of the finest parts, its root part is RCSTank1-2.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.7.3.
Notes
If crewing the ship, put the pilot in the Mk2 inline cockpit.
The science instruments are in a hidden bay off of the Mk1 lander can.
The name Hanger 28 comes from the 28 docking ports.
However inspired by little green aliens kept in Hangar 18I learned a bunch from this ship and kept coming back to it.
On some machines the higher part count can be slow.
Without a fast computer, frame rate can drop. Turning off the lights and RCS can help some. If its too slow to be able to dock, you may want to stick to lower part count vehicles, or get MechJeb and use the auto dock function.I have another version with the RCS thrusters much reduced and better balanced. Let me know if you are interested and I can post an update.
Sep 2019, Updated craft from KSP 1.4.3 to version 1.7.3.
Sep 2019, Upgraded to the Hanger 29 version. Better RCS, fewer parts, and more liquid fuel for Jool missions. Holds 30 Kerbals vs the original 38 Kerbals.
Original Hanger 18 and Hanger 28 craft available upon request. Hanger 28 and update has 28 craft docking ports and 4 missile / probe docking ports.
- Jul 2021, temporary upgrade to new Hangar 13 until I make a new page for it. Uses more efficient Wolfhound engines and 1.11.2 EVA construction and RCS upgrades, but now requires making history. Includes construction part storage and enclosed the hangar for top secret mystery missions. The stock Hanger 28 will return next month after I make the new Hangar 13 page.
- Aug 2021, reverted to Hanger 29. Hanger 28’s RCS is pretty tricky to work with for docking, but I can get anyone that older version if you like. Both 28 and 29 have the original engine layout from Dsourdure’s original.
