Hangar 13
Science Mysteries Response Carrier
A Space Carrier with a Hangar, forward landing pad, science lab, and a raised bridge.
Equipped with a hidden science bay and new EVA construction parts storage, your expedition is ready to handle unexpected repairs or even build an additional small probe or lander.
So many nooks for a Kerbal to explore. I enjoy keeping this classic ship flying with new upgrades and 500 more delta V. It’s derived from Hanger 28 which is derived from Dsoudure’s original 2015 post on curseforge. (mother-ship-class-aircraft-carrier-stock-1-0-4-ksp)
After investigating the mysterious Duna pyramid, a signal was decoded. An expedition was planned to find and return a large Alien artifacts. The carrier for it was code named Hangar 13.

Ascent
- Requires Direct Ascent (straight up).
- Turn on SAS
- Keep it Slow.
- Do not exceed 130 m/s until 5000m
- Do not exceed 150 m/s until 9000m
- Do not exceed 170 m/s until 12000m
- Start 5 degree turn to the east after you have cleared 10000m.
- Punch it up to full throttle after 12000m or at outer booster separation.
- Ease down slowly another 5 or 10 degrees (about 75 to 65 degrees) and click prograde.
- Target an apoapsis ~120km (anything between 90km and 200km is fine).
- Circularize at apoapsis (this will be a big burn)
Rendezvous & Docking
- Match orbital planes then Rendezvous.

- Also you may need to time warp a few orbits to get a rendezvous. Check each orbit by dragging your maneuver node around the orbit. Advance to the next orbit if there is no good rendezvous.
- Dock with just eyeballing the alignment of the docking ports or use the mod Navball Docking Alignment Indicator. Remember to disengage SAS right before connecting. The better the alignment the better the mate.

Hangar upgrades
The hangar bay has been enlarge and closed off for transporting a few good sized alien artifacts away from prying eyes. Of course there is room for probes, landers, or 3 light fighters and a medium fighter just in case the expedition commander wishes to add them. The upper flight deck has more berths as well.
The front patio is outfitted to handle large cargo pods or small craft for transit to Jool.

After reaching orbit you should still have 1400 -1600 delta V. Fuel levels in the main tanks will be about 45% to 55%.
There is extra fuel in the forward tanks for fighters or it can be transferred back to the main fuel tanks for another 300 delta V. If going extra planetary, you should still refuel the ship before heading out.
The root part, the main RCS tank, is well hidden, that comes from Dsoudure original design.
Originally planned as a KSP 1.11.2 upgraded version of Hanger 28. After significant changes to reduce excessive mass in the engine layout, the total delta V is now much higher, but it now requires the Making History DLC. Thus a new ship for those with the DLC and stock only players still have Hanger 28.
I spent a bunch of time on this space carrier, originally with perfecting and documenting the ascent, and working on lighting. I also added more dorsal solar panels for Jool, and radiators. This round I totally revised the engines to save 40 tons of mass and keep a single fuel type. With the 380 isp Wolfhounds the ship now has about 500 more delta V even without the NERVs. I have also upgraded to new smaller lighting in the hanger and added forward Hanger doors with stock panels.
This also meant updating the docking port layout when removing the old lighting. Yep there are now 13 docking ports on the upper deck better spaced out and more clearance in the hanger. With the new EVA contruction mode in KSP 1.11, you will find the ship is great if you need to scavenge parts from the ship in a pinch. Most of the parts storage is actually aft by the science lab, but there is enough hidden storage under the forward hanger that most parts can be transferred there and construction occur in the Hanger. (Feel free to swap out the stored parts, especially in the hidden areas as you see fit. Breaking ground science equipment is nice, but I swapped them out with stock parts in the Seg 9 storage container so the ship did not have another DLC requirement.
Recommended Mods
No mods are required. As with any carrier you will need to be comfortable with rendezvous, docking, and transferring fuel.
- I always test (and dock) with no mods.
Navball_Docking_Alignment_Indicator_CE (more precise docking by helping you align the direction of both ports)
TacFuelBalancer (for transferring fuel from hidden tanks, or transferring fuel to all fuel tanks in one go)
MechJeb2 (Not needed nearly as much any more. I used it for delta V display, Holman transfer timing calculations, closest approach display, and precise orbital inclination. As of KSP 1.12.1 all these tools are now in the stock game.)
