The various R7-derived launchers have been in service for decades all the way back to Sputnik and Vostok. They have been modified extensively through the years with upgrades as needed. The Soyuz-2 launcher is a near-complete rebuild of the R7-derived launcher thus completing a newer R7 sub-family with plans for it to replace all older R7-derived launchers. It added a number of new features to the design including making launches simpler and more cost-efficient.

The Soyuz-2-1v is one of the newer variants first launched in 2013. It is meant to replace certain light payload launchers such as the Zenit with comparable performance to the Long March 2C and PSLV. It is the only variant that does away entirely with the R7-derived boosters and supports a number of upper stages such as the Volga with a focus on Molniya orbits.

The Union I is an approximation of the Soyuz-2-1v and is meant for light payloads between 2 and 3 tonnes into a variety of orbits and inclinations. It’s a simple two-staged rocket with the lower stage handling the ascent while the upper stage handles the circularization and if necessary, orbital changes. This makes it easy to decide when to decouple the lower stage, simply do it when you have reached your desired apogee projection or when you have hit the edge of space.

I have included a small test payload for demonstrative purposes.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.4.3.
