Prior to the adaption of the Saturn I, IB, and V there were a number of proposals for heavy lifters with variants using almost every possible combination of then-existing rocket stages available. An early Saturn proposal used the lower stage of a Saturn I for the first stage, the lower stage of a Titan I ICBM for the second stage and the Centaur C for a third stage. The proposed design could be used for a small lunar mission or to launch interplanetary probes.
The Sarnus A-1 is an adaption of this design using the Sarnus I’s lower stage for the first stage, the Prometheus I ICBM’s lower stage for its second stage and lastly the Inon stage for the third stage. The included craft is dubbed the “Leo Julii’ as an advanced variant of the Leo Vinci spacecraft (BDD’s approximation of the Gemini spacecraft).
The first stage, Sarnus I, is a powerful lifter which gets the rest of the rocket into the upper atmosphere after which the second stage, the Prometheus I, takes over for the rest of ascent and the circularization. The third stage, the Inon, is used to for the Trans Munar Injection (TMI) burn after which its ejected.
The Leo Juli has more than sufficient resources for orbital missions but instead of the fuel cells used with the Vinci spacecraft it uses a pair of wings which double as solar panels and antennae and are based on the Advanced Gemini winged designs. Both the liquid fuel/oxygen and the monopropellent supply are excessive for its intended missions to give the user considerable freedom for orbital exploration.
