The original plans for the Mir space station centered around the 37K modules, which were built around being carried by the Buran space shuttle. However, the Buran’s development delays meant it wouldn’t be available for constructing the space station, and most of the 37K modules were cancelled. They were largely replaced by the 77K modules, which were heavy modifications of the FGB (Functional Cargo Block) that was one half of the TKS spacecraft.
The Kvant-2 module became the first 77K module to be docked with Mir in 1989, a whole two years after the station got its second module, Kvant-1. It was divided into three major sections – airlock, cargo, and experimentation. The module’s airlock allowed for much easier EVAs, as previously, the Mir Core Module’s docking adapter was used as an airlock, which could be troublesome. The cargo section could also be used to extend the airlock or even act as a backup airlock in an emergency. The module also delivered a host of new experiments, a new computer, showers, and equipment to turn urine into drinkable water.
The Quantum-2 is an approximation of the Kvant-2 module using Tantares parts. It’s built out of a TSS spacecraft much like the real Kvant-2 was built from the TKS. It appears two more solar panels, an airlock for easier EVAs, and generally more space for crew and cargo. Since it’s a re-purposed TSS it gets to its destination without the aid of an external tug. The module placement is extremely important or else it’ll collide with the pre-existing solar panel arrays on the core module.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.12.5.
