This is my build of the Fenris-Alpha I from the Blue Dog Bureau manual which is equivalent to the Thor-Able rocket (minus the solid engine third stage). It is a two-stage liquid engine launcher designed for small munar probes and satellites such as the test one I’ve already provided which is about 50kg and approximates the failed Pioneer 0-2 probes.
In real life the original Thor-Able was meant to launch the first of the Pioneer satellites which were meant to enter lunar orbit; however each of the launches failed in the upper atmosphere.
You should probably be able to handle the entire ascent and orbital insertion through the first stage but if not there is plenty of extra delta-v in the second stage to finish it out. The second stage is for TMI (Trans-Munar Insertion) and MOI (Munar Orbital Insertion) but be warned that its thrust is relatively low so it will be a longer burn in both cases and thus prone to more errors. You should be careful with any decoupling after your TMI burn because it might throw off your trajectory entirely.
Updated for KSP 1.2.2 with no significant changes neccesary.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.3.0.
