Description
The Ignis I is our smallest and cheapest SSTO. Costing only 21,686 funds and containing only 441 units of liquid fuel and 319 units of oxidiser, it is an economical choice for those who wish to go to space in style. It has a maximum orbital ΔV of 1450m/s, and an average orbital ΔV of around 650m/s, easily enough to get to a station. It has no docking ports so it has to be attached using an Advanced Grabbing Unit, aka Klaw.
It has a large TWR as it weighs only 7.5 tons. This means that it accelerates quickly, and you reach several hundred m/s before the end of the runway. Pull up to about 15-20 degrees, and accelerate upwards. Even at this angle, you can get to over 1400m/s. Overheating is normal, but the ascent path needs to be steep so nothing explodes. At 23km, switch to Rapier mode.
Landing at low speeds is rather tricky, but it is easy to control at higher speeds. Touchdown at 60m/s is recommended, which is why we have provided 2 drogue parachutes to decelerate quickly. Drift down very slowly, pointing just above the horizon, and as soon as the wheels contact, use the Abort action group ([BACKSPACE]) to deploy the parachutes and come to a stop.
