Description

The single stage to Duna capable Super Biplane MKII was fitted with a heavier payload, sacrificing 1 nuke engine for a light mining rover. This tradeoff makes it SSTA capable when mining.

A stock aircraft called super biplane MKIIID. Built with 49 of the finest parts, its root part is mk2Cockpit.Standard.

Unlike all other SSTOs in my fleet, this one does not require orbital refuelling. It can make it to minmus and mine from there. This SSTA can either undock its rover to mine and explore or retract landing gear in higher gravity environments and drill with the rover still docked. Any slight touching between the rover and spaceplane will tear the rover apart, even from the docking bay’s magnetic pull when docking. When docking in low gravity environments, retract spaceplane’s landing gear, enable rover’s RCS tank, press brakes, then lightly tap K to hover up and press I to counter the docking bay jr’s magnetic pull to prevent a hard impact that can otherwise break apart the rover. The rover has an RTG for exploration without worrying about fuel. If about to tip rover over, use roll keys with RCS to right it back up before it flips over which makes survivability easier than taxiing the spaceplane. Best driven with RCS off unless about to flip over. Needs engineer driver for optimal mining. When docking rover, ensure control is set to the kerbal driver and not the docking port jr or else RCS orientation and wheel steering will be all wrong. The spaceplane also contains a small emergency parachute which, in planets like kerbin, will destroy the craft’s nuke engine when landing on its tail but otherwise it will remain intact.

Kraft confirmed to be able to go from Kerbin->Minmus->Ike->Dres->Laythe->Vall. It cannot land on any planetary body equal to or larger than Eve, including Tylo. The MK2 body allows for better heat resistance when landing through atmosphere with stronger crash tolerance than MK1 based fuselages. Its twin R.A.P.I.E.R. engines give better 0g landing capabilities in larger vacuum planets and moons than single engine designs.
