Description

A stock aircraft called Moonraker v C7. Built with 97 of the finest parts, its root part is adapterMk3-Size2Slant.

This is a rebalanced version of variant C2 with the NERV engine moved inside and can now operate at full power. Unlike others who claim to make single stage to anywhere ships, this one has been tested to do a Moho flyby if refuelling using its full sized ISRU and drill at Minmus followed by Gilly. Note that mining in Gilly using rover will be extremely difficult due to low gravity. No mods have been used except hyper edit in case a bad save is made and the ship needs to be returned to a previous location that has already been reached before.

Rover itself has been changed to be controlled by a probe core so the ship’s crew has been reduced to 1. This allowed the drill to be moved to the front side, eliminating the older C2 variant’s problem of getting stuck when rolling out of the cargo ramp. Rover wheels reduced from 6 to 4 to save weight. Large photovoltaic sail added to rover to act as heat sink for drill and ISRU while providing more recharging power. 2 PB-NUKs added for outer solar system recharging. 1 was added to ship and 2nd to rover. Gravioli detector added to rear of rover as well. MK1 liquid fuel tank in tail fin section replaced by bigger Rockomax X200-8 fuel tank, now part of the rover which is stored internally, improving aerodynamics. It is disabled at launch to keep R.A.P.I.E.R. engines running at 100% thrust (small docking port limits fuel flow so it should be transferred manually after other fuel tanks are depleted).

Rear thud VTOL engines were replaced by additional tandem Aerospikes, also improving aerodynamics. Fuel loadout tweaked to balance changed parts. This craft has real VTOL, not like those other ships that can only take off vertically from Minmus. It can take off vertically from Kerbin.

To reach kerbin orbit, it’s crucial to transition from VTOL to level flight as soon as possible, pitching nose up at around 70 m/s before shutting off VTOL engines. Keep nose pitched up enough while still slowly building up speed and level out just enough at 10km height, sacrificing rate of altitude gain in exchange for speed buildup rate. Try to reach highest speed possible and let R.A.P.I.E.R.s switch to closed cycle automatically to conserve fuel. Keep shallow pitch, opting to build up speed to 2000 m/s rather than trying to gain altitude vertically. Horizontal trajectory will still reach orbit. Start building up orbital trajectory at 80km or higher. Will likely have to switch to NERV engine to finish burn as oxidizer will run out. Refuel in orbit and set destination to Minmus to mine and refuel. Keep hopping from moon to moon, mining at each stopover around other planets to reach your destination.

It is recommended for all mining to be done on moons with little to no atmosphere as this craft does not handle atmospheric friction well, with Kerbin atmosphere thickness being its limit for survivability when re-entering for a landing. Don’t forget that parachutes are available if landing on a planetary body that has an atmosphere.
