VTOL operation:
Recommend the TCA(Thrust Control Avionics) mod to balance the engines in vtol mod, though even without the mod you can still do it manually by sliding the Thrust limiter, RCS will help compensating for your imprecision. Just set thrust limit of the rear engine to 33% when it is fully downward, 100% when it is at 45 degree swivel, smaller than 45 degree you will have to reduce thrust limit of the lift fan.

Vtol liftoff: Check RCS and SAS is on, press 8 to toggle the lift fan, press 5 to cycle the nozzle to vertical position, check rear engine thrust limit at 33% (don’t need to if you have TCA). Slowly throttle up to full thrust, once off the ground, double tap 6 to slowly inch the nozzle backward while increasing rear engine thrust limit (100% at 45 degree), once you have enough airspeed just press 6 to cycle the novel to zero deflection and press 8 to toggle off lift fan.
Vtol Landing: Everything in reverse. For precision hover, control from probe core on top of fuselage and set SAS to radial out, control thrust to TWR to 1, use RCS to fine control vertical speed (tap H / N). This will offer you extreme precision in vtol flight, you can literally land on a pin head….
