The Horizon Lance-R
Lifter is a simple, kerbal proof, fully reusable SSTO rocket. It has a very modest yet useful payload capacity of about 36-40t. Simply uncouple payload, burn retrograde, fast forward through reentry, pull the ‘chutes, enjoy!
The price tag may be a bit high for the capacity, but it can largely pay for itself through reuse and simplicity!
-HECS Probe Core attached directly after fairing (inside top tank) to provide control after payload seperation.
-5 Vector Engines (exterior 4 with gimbal reduced to 10% for stability)
-25,920 Fuel/ 31,680 Oxidizer
-288,000kg Mass
-4,683kN Thrust
-1.35 TWR (empty)
-4,880m/s, 2m58s burn (empty)
-~36-40t Payload Capacity
First Stage- Decouple launch clamps, ignite all engines
Second Stage- Deploy Fairing
Third Stage- Deploy Parachutes
Suggestions For Piloting:
Full thrust at liftoff, RCS off. Accelerate to about 140m/s then begin gravity turn. I’ve found it helps to make my ascent slightly more steep than a standard craft (although, you may be a better pilot than me). Once at about 25,000m reduce thrust to about 50-60% to avoid excessive drag in the upper atmosphere. Once desired apoapsis is reached cut engines and enable RCS. Circularize and decouple payload. After seperation wait until you reach apoapsis, then fire the engines retrograde. Craft functions best carrying around a 36t(Orange Tank
) payload to a very low Kerbin orbit of 70-100km. It also functions great when an upper stage is added.
I built this for use in my game using the StageRecovery mod, in which the parachutes make it possible for an almost full recovery without piloting. If you desire a cleaner look or more optimized craft, parachutes can be removed. As it is currently built its velocity is less than 4m/s at Kerbin after parachutes are deployed.
I hope you enjoy this craft. I’m open to any questions or suggestions!
