Description

Large four-turboprop-engined strategic bomber and missile platform which entered service with the Soviet Union in 1956. Premier Russian nuclear bomber through much of the Cold War, continuing to be produced into the 1990s. Still used by Russian Air Force.

The Tupolev Tu-95 ‘Bear’ was developed to meet the Soviet objective of having a bomber capable of travelling intercontinental distance without refuelling, and an ability to carry a 11,000kg bombload. Piston engines were not powerful enough to achieve this, while the available AM-3 jet engines were far too fuel hungry, such that a bomber powered by them would not meet the range requirement. The Kusenstov coupled turboprop engine solved the problem - each with two, four-bladed contra-rotating propellers, designed by German ex-Junkers engineers. While the engines were a radical departure from anything that had been seen before, the fuselage and wings were conservative in design, essentially following in the footsteps of the Tu-4 (unlicenced copy of the revolutionary WW2 bomber, the Boeing B-29 Stratofortress).

The Tu-95, like its American intercontinental bomber counterpart, the B-52 stratofortress, has remained in service into the 21st century, thanks to its enormous adaptability. Tu-95s have been used as cruise missile platforms, maritime patrol aircraft, AWACS platforms, and even as airliners. Again, like the B-52, the Tu-95 Bear is a Cold War icon, much loved, and synonymous with the age of nuclear rivalry.
