Description

~
Summary: Cold war strategic bomber. Grey/green disruptive pattern scheme for low level missions. Powered by Rolls-Royce Conway turbofans. Equipped with 1x Blue Steel nuclear stand-off missile.
~
The most advanced of the three V-Bombers which formed Great Britain’s air-based nuclear deterrent from the 1950s-70s, the Handley Page Victor was the largest, and last to come into service.
~
The B2 version was developed in the late 1950s with the objective of achieving greater altitude and range. The Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire 49kN turbojets of the original Handley Page Victor B1 nuclear bomber (see model here) were replaced with more powerful Rolls-Royce Conway 11 (76.7kN) turbofans, requiring the integrated intakes to be made larger. The wingtips were extended on this version, to a total wingspan of 120ft, and elephant ear intakes were added near that tail to power Ram Air Turbines to provide electrical power during emergencies. The B2 was also the first variant to feature Kuchemann carrots - anti shock bodies on the wings, which also housed chaff dispensers.
~
Although the B2s were initially in anti-flash white and designed for high altitude nuclear bombing, the Gary Powers U2 incident in 1960 which demonstrated the capabilities of Soviet SAMs necessitated a change in strategy, and the V-Force were switched to a strategy of low-level high speed flying, being repainted with grey and green disruptive camouflage (as represented by this model). Shortly thereafter, the B2s were retrofitted with the Avro Blue-Steel nuclear stand-off missile (featured on this model).
~
The Handley-Page Victor never saw action as a conventional bomber, and was retired from its nuclear deterrent role in 1968 following discovery that the construction was ill suited for long-term use in low-level flight.

~ The remaining Victors were used for strategic reconnaissance, or converted to tankers (K2 standard) and continued to be used until 1992. (Victor K2 model to follow). Victor K2 Tankers played a crucial role in the infamous Black Buck raids of the Falklands War, and in the first Gulf War.
