Description

~
Summary: French transonic fighter-bomber in service with the French Air Force from 1953 - 1980s, and also used by the Indian and Isreaeli Air Forces. During the Suez Crisis, Israeli Mystere IVs outclassed Egyptian MiG-15s, 17s, and DeHavilland Vampires.
~
The Dassault Mystère IV was an evolutionary development of the Mystère II aircraft. Although bearing an external resemblance to the earlier aircraft, the Mystère IV was in fact a new design with aerodynamic improvements for supersonic flight. The prototype first flew on 28 September 1952, and the aircraft entered service in April 1953. The first 50 Mystere IVA production aircraft were powered by British Rolls-Royce Tay turbojets, while the remainder had the French-built Hispano-Suiza Verdon 350 version of that engine.
~
Israeli Mystère IVs saw action during the Arab–Israeli wars and were joined by the French Mystères for the Suez crisis. During the Suez crisis, Mysteres took down many Egyptian MiG-15s, MiG-17s, and DeHavilland Vampires, while only one Mystere was lost during the conflict, due to ground-fire. During the Six-Day War in 1967, Israeli Mystere IVs again saw action, claiming MiG-17s and a Jordanian Hawker Hunter. However, during that conflict seven Mysteres were lost (two to enemy fighters).
~
The Mystere IV was also operated by the Indian Air Force, seeing action in the Indo-Pakistani Wars of 1965 and 71.
