Description

~
Summary: Primary all-weather interceptor used by USAF from 1960s through to the 1980, and the last fulkly dedicated interceptor used by USAF. Introduced in 1959, capable of Mach 2.3 thanks to its powerful Pratt & Whitney J75-17 afterburning turbojet.
~
The F-106 was the ultimate development of USAF’s 1954 interceptor programme, and developed from the promising but flawed F-102 Delta Dagger. The F-106 Delta Dart improved on it’s older brother’s design, with thinner but larger area-ruled wings, variable-geometry inlet duct, slightly longer and generally smoother fuselage.
~
In practise, the F-106’s name Delta Dart was rarely used, and the plane was usually referred to simply as The Six. The F-106 served in the continental US, Alaska, Iceland, and for brief periods in Germany and South Korea. Although considered for use in the Vietnam War, it never saw combat, and was not exported for foreign use either.
~
During its long life the F-106 was gradually updated, with improved avionics, improved wings featuring conical camber, infrared search and track systems, and features like inflight refuelling gear, and arrestor hook for emergency landing.

Air-to-air combat exercises suggested the F-106 was a reasonable match for the McDonnel Douglas F-4 Phantom II (see #AedsPlanes model) in a dogfight, with superior high-altitude turn performance and overall maneuverability. The Phantom, however, had better radar and greater armament, and superior climb performance.
~
Between June 1983 and 1988, F-106s were gradually retired and sent for storage. However, many were converted to target drones (designated QF-106As) and used for target practice, under the Pacer Six Programme. The last of these drones was destroyed in 1998.

A stock aircraft called Convair F-106 Delta Dart, part of the #AedsPlanes Starter Pack. Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.2.1.
