Description

The Science Lander is a reusable single-stage two-kerman lander that is capable of a landing on and ascent from every vacuum body but Tylo. From LKO, it can also make a Minmus landing and return, although it would generally be paired with a Krew Transfer Vehicle to allow for aerobraking and for multiple landings on a single flight - the rover is more massive than the fuel for a typical Minmus landing, so it’s actually possible to lift off with more ∆v than you started with. Fuel margins are generous everywhere but Vall, and it carries sufficient monoprop for multiple dockings.

The lander itself carries the Science Jr. module as well as all four small experiments, and the stowed rover has the small experiments and two Mystery Goo modules. For a typical Mun mission, the results of all six experiments would be carried back to Kerbin, with the rover remaining behind to transmit five results from two additional biomes. Alternatively the rover can remain aboard for repeated biome-hopping on, for example, Minmus.

The Mk3 features: lower part count; reduced cost; a new engine for greater TWR and ∆v; improved lighting; higher ground clearance; improved rover deployment (kneel the lander down on that side); five-way RCS; retractable solar panels; 8-track hifi stereo; and a window!
