Description

The 44-gun heavy frigate Caldonia was launched in 897 as the lead ship of her class. It was put into service patrolling the waters between Eslan and Tros, its large size and endurance making it suitable for the role of intercepting any Troscan ships that broke their self-imposed blockade.

History

On the eve of the war, Caldonia was on a standard 2-ship patrol with her sister ship Albatros, when they encounted part of the Troscan invasion fleet. Without warning, the ships opened fire on the Albatros, immediately sinking her with the loss of most of her crew. The Caldonia was signalled to surrender or risk destruction, and the captain wisely chose to strike the colors after seeing the overwhelming power of these unfamiliar ships’ weapons.

This is mostly a display piece, so if you want to take screenshots with it use VesselMover or the F12 menu to move it to the water. It has 4 jet engines attached so it can be moved around.

With its crew taken prisoner, Caldonia was towed to Tros and was formally comissioned into the Troscan Navy, becoming the HTMS Caldonia. The sail-powered ship had no place in the fully steam-powered Troscan battle line, instead being towed around various Troscan ports on tours to raise war bonds, and as a reminder of the unyielding Troscan naval and technical supremacy. Following the end of the war, Caldonia was berthed at the Troscan Navy’s homeport as a training ship for naval reservists, and later as a barracks ships, languishing in this state for many years.

By the outbreak of the Continental War, years of usage had caused Caldonia to deteriorate, but no funds could be spared for the extensive reconstruction that would be needed to ensure she stayed afloat, and the museum’s naval personnel were quickly recalled to active service. Caldonia was left largely forgotten at port, where she was exposed to the elements and vandals for the duration of the war. Shortly following the conclusion of the war, Caldonia finally succumbed to the years of neglect and sank at her moorings. She was raised after a complex recovery operation and towed to an unused dry dock at the Naval base. Eventually, the funds were approved for repairs and reconstruction of the ship, which involved replacing much of the decayed oak wood used in the ship and replacing the rigging. The restoration was completed in 945 and Caldonia is now open to the public as part of the Continental War Museum’s collection.
