The mainstay of the bavarian air force until 1935, the DS-3 Geier.
Introduced to service in the early months of 1917 as a response to increasingly violent attacks from pirates against unarmed airships, the DS-3 proved itself far more capable than any other fighter of the time, boasting incredible acceleration and maneuverability. When the DS-3 was in its prime, any sky pirate worth their salt would run as fast as they could from the roar of the diesel powered 4 cylinder engine. As with all things, however, the DS-3 slowly became obsolete. By the 1930s, it was considered to be a flying death trap if you ever had to take a DS-3 into combat.

Multiple variants were designed, with the final DS-3/L having a 3 bladed constant speed propeller and 20mm cannons instead of the aging twin 7.92mm machine guns. The version you see here is an original, with the constant pitch 2 bladed propeller.

Das Standbein der bayerischen Luftwaffe war bis 1935 die DS-3 “Geier”. Die DS-3 wurde in den ersten Monaten des Jahres 1917 als Reaktion auf immer heftiger werdende Angriffe von Piraten auf unbewaffnete Luftschiffe eingeführt und erwies sich als weitaus fähiger als jeder andere Jäger ihrer Zeit. Sie zeichnete sich durch eine unglaubliche Beschleunigung und Wendigkeit aus. Während ihrer Blütezeit, flüchtete jeder Himmelspirat, der etwas auf sich hielt, so schnell wie möglich vom Dröhnen des dieselbetriebenen 4-Zylinder-Motors. Doch wie bei allen Dingen, veraltete die DS-3 nach und nach und in den 1930er Jahren galt als ein Todesurteil mit der DS-3 in den Kampf ziehen zu müssen.

Es wurden mehrere Varianten entwickelt, wobei die endgültige DS-3/L mit einem dreiflügeligen Propeller mit konstanter Geschwindigkeit und 20mm Kanonen anstelle der alternden 7,92mm Doppelmaschinengewehre ausgerüstet war. Bei der hier gezeigten Version handelt es sich um die Originalvariante mit einem zweiflügeligen Propeller und konstantem Anstellwinkel.
