WARNING - This spacecraft is incredibly unstable once out of fuel. In the lower layer of the atmosphere it’s a necessity to control it by single
tap on the control keys or you will have some bad surprises. In case of a spin you will need to be at least at 900 meters of height, under those you will have as much possibilities than a Harrier pilot having an engine shut down during a vertical phase. - WARNING
I conceived the X-22A as a simple and high-performances shuttle for space stations transit or even touristic flights to the Mun or Minmus orbits.
Named after the famous nymph, umpteenth love of Zeus, Callisto is more simpler and cheaper than most of the precedent shuttles I uploaded here. It received the X-23A Adonis first and second stage. With its single Mainsail replacing the dual Vector the cost just dropped but the first stage now isn’t recoverable anymore.
The launch appears to be simple, the whole system being pretty stable and reactive to your inputs. The first stage should be able to give you the kick to reach 150 km. The second, with its single Swivel, can ensure the circularization and a part of the transfer to one of the moons.
In case of an orbital mission Callisto got a Mk2 Clamp-O-Tron and six Linear RCS Port.
The re-entry now is the beginning of the complications… the best before it is to transfer all your remains of fuel to the nose and forward tanks. Once around an altitude of 70 km be sure to present no more than a 25 degrees positive angle. More will probably make the craft stalling from its rear and impossible to recover, apart in the most thicker layers of the atmosphere.
Once the plasma around had disappeared I recommend to gently drop the nose a bit, if possible to keep the horizon stable, then each maneuvers has to be made with precaution and tenderness (Callisto is a nymph after all).
The X-22A is a good glider but in case of emergency (and if you still have fuel of course) a J-20 Juno engine is available to increase your range. Its full thrust is not enough to ensure a go-around, but you can maintain your altitude or a sufficient speed to find a solution to your problem.
Then comes the worst of all : landing. The short final is really… intense. Once again all I can advise is to be gentle with the machine, and the machine will be gentle with you. With the wings stabilized and the nose up of 5-10 degrees Callisto will stall around 45 m/s only.
Finally a breaking chute is available, just in case.
