Description

This craft is a bit particular to me as Zenit is, and will always stays my favorite launcher. It’s not the first time I was attracted to realize one, the Dawn-3SLB having been built eight months ago.
But once again I didn’t have the force to try to build an excellent 3SL model with its Sea Odyssey launching platform… something partly due to my computer which starts to be old and underpowered now. So the main objective was to conceive a mini version of the famous Zenit-3SL operated for years by Sea Launch before their fall.

The craft is built from less than 300 parts and consists in a controllable offshore platform carrying the launcher.
The platform itself is able to reach many different launching site by itself. Mini Zenit-3SL for her part is able to place a small relay ComSat of one ton on a 1000 x 1000 km orbit inclined at 45 degrees. The first stage being powered by four Thud to imitate the powerful RD-171 of Zenit and giving 1.6 km/s of impulsion. The second and last stage has a single Terrier assisted by four Twitch to copy the RD-8 and RD-120; it also benefit of more than 3.3 km/s of dV, enough to leave the Kerbin’s sphere of influence.

On the ground the platform can be drove at a speed of 70 m/s while warping at x 4 and without suffering from any disassembling. Its speed on the sea varying from 23.1 m/s at full fuel to 39 m/s when nearly empty. The platform has an autonomy of six hours, enough to navigate to various launching locations.

Now with a Space Center perfectly located at the equator why would you go for another site which will always be less efficient? For fun!.. or if you are someone only working with stock it could give an opportunity to move around without using an editor.

Also the ship presented on the picture is an older one. The current variant got a Mk2 inline cockpit to give the opportunity to leave for the pilot and more radio antennas has been placed.

A stock aircraft called Mini Zenit 3SL. Built with 271 of the finest parts, its root part is wingConnector2.

  • Update I: remodeled Zenit and her platform for a better looking. The launcher also got better performances.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.3.0.

The launch album

Da Jeb’ is enjoying the watch of these powerful Thud engines!

Mini Zenit-3SL is joyful to fly as a launcher. Reactive and smooth to any commands.

22 August 2006, Pacific Ocean, 03:27:01 GMT. For its 22nd launch the 3SL variant is lifting off from Sea Odyssey, carrying the 4.5 tons Koreasat 5.
