Description

MB-1 (Mun Base One), the first permanent crewed outpost on the munar surface, represents an ambitious step in space exploration, with space for five Kerbals in an almost surely airtight cabin, storage containment for whatever they can pick up off the ground or scrape off their boots, and multiple solar arrays for all the electricity they could ever eat.

Both of the launcher’s core stages are designed for recovery and reuse. The lower stage contains a small probe mechanism to run its recovery systems automatically; at this point in time, the astronauts still weren’t sure they could trust an automatic mechanism smart enough to bring a rocket stage round behind the Mun and return it to Kerbin, so the upper stage instead has a small crew cabin to let a Kerbal manually fly the stage back home. This crew member is intended to jump out and parachute down on their own once the stage is prepped for landing, but particularly brave pilots may try to land with the stage itself.

The munarbase itself is launched upside down on its launcher for technical reasons. Warranty void if a pilot forgets this and damages the base by ramming the upper stage with it. Warranty also does not cover damage from maurading bands of silver-suited cyborg Kerbals from Kerbin’s long-lost twin planet.

The base has far more Δv than is strictly necessary, making it easy to lift off and fly over to another landing site if the current terrain isn’t to your liking.
