Description

Although the Kerbal XXX, (the mysterious Kerbal XX, launched atop a Kerbal X rocket) proved quite a capable craft, there was still room for improvement.

With a lighter yet higher-capacity upper-stage fuel-tank assembly, among other improvements, the Kerbal XXY is sure to further advance the Kerbal Space Program’s lead in the field of nuclear powered crewed space exploration!

Where the upper stage of the Kerbal XXX had the original Kerbal XX’s big Rockomax fuel tank, complete with unused oxidiser tankage, the XXY uses a slimmer pair of dedicated fuel-only tanks. (The deployable solar arrays are still mounted on the fuel tanks; to help keep them from being shaded when the capsule’s nose is pointed sunwards, they’re mounted on pistons which move them out from behind the capsule when deployed.)

The lower stages have also been improved, with the XX’s six Swivel booster engines replaced with more-powerful-and-more-efficient-at-low-altitudes Reliants, and the core stage upgraded to a smart design, with batteries, antennae, solar panels, and a Steadler RGU to allow the discarded stage to be controlled, RCS for deorbiting it, and airbrakes and parachutes to allow the stage to be soft-landed and recovered back on Kerbin.

A stock rocket called Kerbal XXY. Built with 133 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1-3pod.
