Description

A stock rocket called Kerbal X5. Built with 104 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1-3pod.

The Kerbal X5 is another considerably-modified Kerbal X, although this time most (but not all!) of the modifications are to the smaller stuff.

Said modifications are:

  • The booster Swivels have, once again, been replaced with higher-thrust, better-low-altitude-efficiency Reliants.
  • The fuel lines between the asparagus boosters have been moved from below the aerodynamic control fins to above them.
  • The nosecones of the six boosters have been strutted to the core stage for improved structural rigidity.
  • The core stage’s upper two X200-32 fuel tanks have been replaced with a single Jumbo-64, providing decreased partcount and increased rigidity without altering the stage’s tankage’s mass or fuel capacity.
  • Much scientific instrumentation has been bolted onto the sides of the upper stage.
  • The upper stage’s solar-panel complement has been increased, with the original pair of OX-STATs being augmented by an additional quartet of OX-STATs plus a pair of SP-L 1x6 deployable solar arrays.
  • A pair of OX-STATs have also been glued onto the command module itself, to keep its batteries from going flat during prolonged upper-stage-less flight.
  • A total of four small monopropellant tanks, plus a pair of RCS quads, have been added to the command module to augment its internal monopropellant supply and built-in RCS thrusters (importantly, the bolted-on quads give the command module the ability to translate forwards and backwards, an ability it would otherwise lack).
  • The X’s nose-mounted parachute has been replaced with a pair of radial-mounted parachutes, with the freed-up nose real estate being given to a Steadler RGU (to allow for uncrewed or non-pilot-crewed operation) with a shielded docking port mounted atop it (to allow for, well, docking).
  • A Communotron 16-S antenna has been attached to the command module to allow for two-way communications and data transfer even when the upper-stage DTS-M1 antenna is retracted (for instance, during atmospheric ascent or reentry).
  • And one purely cosmetic change: the old-model Mainsail used on the X’s core stage has been replaced with the new version.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.10.0.
