Description

A stock rocket called Kerbal X1. Built with 93 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1-3pod.

The Kerbal X1, as the name indicates, is an enhanced version of the Kerbal X stock craft:

  • The core stage has been slightly stretched, and the X’s Mainsail engine has been replaced by a pair of Vectors. (The Vectors’ gimballing can be toggled on and off by pressing 3; when the core stage is almost empty, and the vehicle’s thrust-to-weight ratio is highest, their high thrust and wide gimbal range makes them prone to overcontrolling when at full throttle, resulting in increasingly-large roll oscillations if gimballing is left enabled [the X1 does not appear to be significantly vulnerable to pitch or yaw oscillations from this mechanism, however].)
  • The first two sets of asparagus boosters have had their Swivels replaced by Reliants; the Reliant is lighter and more powerful than its gimballing sibling and has a slightly higher efficiency in the lower atmosphere (the Swivel is more efficient in vacuum, but these boosters will be dropped long before we get anywhere near vacuum), and its lack of thrust vectoring isn’t an issue with the large amount of control authority from the pair of gimballing Vectors on the core stage.
  • The Swivels on the last set of boosters, which stay with the core stage the longest and burn the highest, have been replaced with Dart aerospike engines, which are considerably more efficient than the Swivel (although their lower thrust-to-weight ratio makes them less suitable early on). The boosters of this set have also been stretched slightly, for extra Δv, and equipped with sepratrons to make sure that the longer boosters separate cleanly from the core stage.
  • The aerodynamic control fins have been moved from the core stage to the boosters, as they’re merely dead weight once in space; their number has also been reduced, from six to four, as four fins are still perfectly adequate for flight control and stability during ascent, and are lighter than six.
  • A reaction-wheel module has been added to the top of the core stage for enhanced attitude control when in space.
  • A pair of Clamp-O-Tron Jr. docking ports have been added to the sides of the upper stage.
  • The upper stage is now equipped with a large-model Steadler RGU, allowing the X1 to be flown unmanned.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.10.0.
