Description
A crewed craft I built on a whim, to see if I could successfully return to Kerbin from the Mun in a craft using a solid-fuelled stage for the main munar ascent.
To return to Kerbin, use the fuel left in the last liquid-fuelled stage to lift off and point the craft approximately Kerbin-retrograde, then fire up the Hammer SRB. When your projected trajectory intersects Kerbin’s surface, turn off SAS and stage again to activate the ascent stage’s tumble motors, which spin the stage end over end fast enough to null out most of the Hammer’s remaining Δv. There will still be some over- or undershoot before the craft is tumbling fast enough to matter, but this can be easily corrected for using the crew capsule’s monopropellant supply and RCS thrusters. (To lessen the chance of things colliding with each other and blowing up, I recommend that you turn SAS back on and wait for the tumbling to stop before you stage away the ascent stage.)
A stock rocket called Grand Larceny. Built with 54 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1pod.v2.
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.10.1.
