Description

This craft consists of a small munar orbiter carried by a Globus booster with the Capable upper-stage system. It’s modelled after the real-life Atlas-Able (the first attempt at adding an upper stage to extend the capabilities of the Atlas launch vehicle), which, somewhat infamously, failed in every single one of its attempts at launching a spaceprobe… but, then, nobody ever said our creations in KSP had to be constrained by real-life success/failure records, now, did they?

Like the Atlas-Able, it has a slender liquid-fuelled second stage (the Capable, a name obviously inspired by the real-life Able second stage), with a small solid-fuelled third stage on top of that. The probe itself is modelled on the Pioneer P-30 lunar orbiter, the payload of the second Atlas-Able flight; like Pioneer P-30, it’s mostly spherical, has four deployable solar arrays mounted somewhat off the sphere’s equator to provide power (the arrays are much bigger than the ones on the real-life probe, due to stock KSP’s limited selection of offerings in the solar-panel department), orbital-insertion and manoeuvring engines on opposite poles of the mostly-sphere (the orbital-insertion engine is an Ant; the manoeuvring engine is a linear RCS port offset somewhat away from the probe’s surface and cosmetically linked to it with a strut), and pairs of long antennae protruding from the sphere near the two engines.

The probe has three scientific instruments mounted on it: a gravioli detector, a thermometer, which mostly just measures the probe’s internal temperature (not that that isn’t an important thing to measure in real life!), and a barometer (because it’s the only other one of the 0.005-tonne class of scientific instruments that can provide science when run in space), to tell us that, yep, space is still a vacuum.

A stock rocket called Globus-Capable. Built with 89 of the finest parts, its root part is adapterSize2-Size1.

Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.10.0.
