Description
A stock rocket called Frog IId. Built with 73 of the finest parts, its root part is mk1pod.v2.
A cheap three-seat ship that can be used in several different ways (some of them only useful in career mode, some useful even in sandbox):
- It can take tourists to orbit, either two of them (with a pilot in the command pod) or three (with even the command pod occupied by a tourist); the Steadler RGU below the command pod means that it doesn’t actually require a pilot to fly it.
- It can take crew to orbit to help them level up.
- It can ferry crew to an orbiting craft, or pick up crew to return them from an orbiting craft (although this requires careful handling, as there’s no RCS, meaning that all manoeuvring has to be done with the upper stage’s Terrier engine; a safer option might be to park it near by the target craft and have the kerbals EVA over).
The upper stage is meant to separate from the crew capsule shortly after retrofire, with the two reentering and landing separately (but still close to one another); the upper stage has an embedded reentry controller that you can use to set it in a high-drag orientation and fire the upper stage’s airbrakes before switching back to the crew capsule. If you’re careful, though, you can keep the upper stage attached and have the two reenter and land as a single unit.
Alternatively, you can leave the crew capsule in orbit (maybe, though not necessarily, attached to another craft), and only deorbit the upper stage, or you could have the upper stage deorbit under its own power and use another craft to deorbit the crew capsule.
The complicated fin arrangement on and around the Hammer strapons is to ensure adequate aerodynamic stability during first- and second-stage flight*, while simultaneously keeping the Hammers from striking and damaging anything on the remaining rocket. (I don’t think I’d unlocked sepratrons yet when I made this.)
Built in the VAB in KSP version 1.7.0.
*- First-stage
here refers to while the Hammers are still burning
, and second-stage
to after Hammer burnout and jettison
.
