#SSTO

Description

The first member of a long line of successful SSTO and almost-SSTO spaceplanes, the FV27 dispenses entirely with oxidiser, using a liquid-fuel-only Nerv nuclear engine for orbital insertion and exoatmospheric manoeuvres.

The highly-efficient Nerv allows the FV27 to go much further for a given amount of fuel than a conventional vehicle would, and, not needing to carry oxidiser, it can carry a greater fuel load to begin with compared to earlier-generation SSTOs (which typically used the Dart chemical aerospike rocket for exoatmospheric flight).

Its only significant drawback is the Nerv’s very poor thrust-to-weight ratio, which necessitates flying at a very high pitch attitude for the latter part of ascent to prevent the vehicle from falling back into the atmosphere before it can get up to orbital speed.

A stock aircraft called FV27. Built with 34 of the finest parts, its root part is Mark2Cockpit.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.10.0.
