Description
Although the Eagle isn’t really a light aircraft, it’s still light enough for its twin Goliath turbofans to give it a staggeringly-high thrust-to-weight ratio (2.22 at sea level on Kerbin; lower at higher altitudes or on Laythe, where the air is thinner and jet engines produce less thrust). The high thrust-to-weight ratio allows for very steep climbouts, and this, along with the massive amount of braking force available from the Goliaths’ thrust reversers upon landing (press 2 to toggle the reversers on or off), makes the Eagle well-suited for short-and/or-obstructed-field operations like landing on the flat portion of a mountaintop to investigate an anomaly that spawned in said inconvenient spot.
In addition to its ridiculously high excess thrust, the Eagle has a forward-looking spotlight mounted below and just behind the cockpit, useful when landing at night and/or trying to pinpoint anomalies flagged by a satellite in high orbit. The batteries which power the spotlight (and also the probe core just behind the cockpit which allows the Eagle to be flown even by an inexperienced pilot, or a scientist or engineer, or even with no one at all on board, and also the stack of manoeuvrability-enhancing reaction wheels behind the probe core) can be recharged without having to burn fuel in the Goliaths, using a pair of solar arrays mounted on the outboard sides of the two engines (press 1 to deploy or retract). Warning: attempting to deploy the solar arrays when not parked and stationary (or at least at no more than walking speed or so), or starting to get up to speed without bothering to stow the arrays, will void the arrays’ warranty.
Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.9.0; its root part is Mark1Cockpit.
