Description
Seeing how the Dynawing’s main engines and disposable external tank actually have more than enough oomph to get the vehicle all the way into orbit, the engineers decided to do a bit of tinkering.
The Dynawing X features an extensively-modified external tank, capable of fully-autonomous flight, and outfitted with solar panels, battery banks, two docking ports (one at each end), antennae, and a self-contained RCS system for (limited) orbital manoeuvring. The orbiter’s payload bay has also been modified, with the solar arrays moved from the forward to the aft bulkhead to make room for a pair of HG-5 light relay antennae, while the reference payload has been made more useful by adding solar panels and a second docking port. The staging sequence has also been modified to allow for an OMS assist burn after SRB separation.
Although it’s just as tricky and demanding to fly as the original Dynawing, requiring essentially the same sorts of techniques and precautions as its progenitor, the Dynawing X is a considerably more capable and versatile craft.
