The ChairSat Sb’s first stage consists mainly of a half-fuelled Thumper SRB derated to 75% thrust, plus three basic fins (offset mostly into the booster body to reduce drag) to keep it pointed in the right general direction, a fairing to cover up the orbital vehicle during atmospheric flight, and the ever-useful decoupler.
The orbital vehicle on top is incredibly small and simple even by ChairSat standards; its main component is a single Dumpling fuel tank, which serves as the mounting point for the forward-facing command seat, the single tiny Spider engine, and a lone cubic octagonal strut to provide an attachment node for the decoupler. The Spider’s gimballing capability allows it to be provide full pitch and yaw control when running; this eliminates the need for a reaction wheel to provide SAS, which, in turn, eliminates the need to carry a battery to supply electrical power. The mass and weight thereby saved allowed for the Baguette fuel tank used on the ChairSat Sa to be replaced with the lighter, more compact Dumpling, allowing for a slimmer (and lighter, and less draggy) fairing configuration.
