Description

The Beetle is a revolutionary type of airplane. Its compact lifting body design, without the large wings of traditional planes, greatly reduces drag, allowing its twin turbofans to push it to over 400 m/s in level flight at low altitude. Takeoff and landing can be a bit hairy though.

When taking off, it generally requires speeds in excess of 100 m/s in order to rotate and lift off, since the elevators aren’t far behind the main landing gear, and, thus, have a very short moment arm. Has a pronounced tendency to roll to one side or the other when lifting off.

When landing, make absolutely certain to touch down in a flat, wings-level attitude (accepting a relatively-high sink rate at touchdown if necessary); touching down main-gear-low will cause it to bounce violently forwards into a nose-stand and blow up, while touching down banked will cause it to yaw to one side, roll over, and blow up. It’s recommended to use reverse thrust for most braking, as the wheelbrakes have an unfortunate tendency to make the plane pull to one side (and roll over, and blow up) when applied at speeds greater than ~20 m/s or so.

A stock aircraft called Beetle. Built with 26 of the finest parts, its root part is mk2Cockpit.Standard.

Built in the SPH in KSP version 1.10.1.
